5. When you are happy with the skin softening, right/ control-click on the mask icon in the Layers palette and select Apply Layer Mask from the pop-up menu.

Then merge the layers by pressing Ctrl/Cmd+E. Now we can turn our attention to brightening the eyes to give them a youthful sparkle.

Select the Magnetic Lasso tool (L) from the Toolbox and draw around the pupil of the left eye. Hold down the Shift key to enable you to add to the selection and then draw around the pupil of the right eye.

Now press Ctrl/Cmd+U to open the Hue/Saturation dialog box, tick the Colorize box, and adjust the Hue and Saturation sliders to make the eyes a natural green colour. Click OK to apply the change.

6. Next, use the Magnetic Lasso tool (L) to select the whites of the eyes. Press Ctrl/Cmd+U again to open the Hue/Saturation dialog box, but this time drag the Lightness slider slightly to the right to brighten the eyes.

Don’t be tempted to overdo the lightness adjustment, as this will leave the eyes looking too bright and unrealistic.

Now that the eyes are refreshed, we can turn our attention to the mouth. Repeat the selection and brightening process with the teeth, remembering not to lighten them too much.

7. As the lips tend to get thinner with age, we will now increase the size of the top lip to make the mouth fuller and more youthful.

Select the Liquify option from the Filter menu to open the Liquify interface. Use the Zoom tool (Z) to zoom into the mouth area and then use the Freeze Mask tool (F) to paint over the teeth to protect them while we enlarge the lips.

Now select the Bloat tool (B) and brush over the lips to pump them up a little. When happy with the enlargement, click OK to apply the distortion and return to the standard Photoshop interface.
