This review is taken from our group test of visual effects plug-ins collections.

Effections is a bundle of RE:Vision Effects plug-ins, which are generally creative and technical tools, rather than whizzy artistic filters. All are available separately, but buying the suite saves over £500 on the individual prices.

The suite includes DE:Noise, FieldsKit, RE:Fill, ReelSmart Motion Blur Pro, RE:Map, Shade/Shape, SmoothKit, Twixtor Pro and Video Gogh. The Plus version adds PV Feather, and RE:Flex, and is only available for After Effects. Only the DE:Noise noise-removal plug-in and Twixtor for creating slow- and fast-motion footage work as FxPlug plug-ins, which is a shame. They also have to be installed separately, which is very time-consuming.

Effections boasts some innovative and powerful tools. RE:Map allows users to modify textures in 3D rendered output without re-rendering, RE:Flex warps and distorts images with a lot of creative control, and RE:Fill intelligently fills in any holes or breaks caused by distortion.

However, the workflow is often fiddly and is not intuitive. RE:Flex, for example requires a precise layering of masks in AE before application, which takes time to perform and longer to learn. This workflow is required because these tools are running as plug-ins, but this doesn’t make them any less fiddly. The manuals can be tricky to understand, too.

The motion filters are excellent additions if you want to push your footage slower or faster – or with more motion blur – than you can achieve using your compositing or editing software’s built-in tools. FieldsKit is great for dealing with interlaced footage in progressive projects (or vice versa). Only Video Gogh won’t be of use often, as it fakes the look of a painting, with limited options.

Supported hosts: After Effects 5 (Win only), AE 6 (Win only), AE 7/CS3, Combustion 3 (Win-only)/4/
2008, Final Cut Pro 6, Premiere Pro 1.5/2/CS3.
