The Lego Movie is a real thing – watch the trailer

Sometimes I get sent projects that ride so close to parody that I'm really not sure whether what I'm watching is for real or not? Today's headscratcher is the debuting trailer for The Lego Movie (above).

Maybe I've seen too many films and film trailers recreated in Lego – from amateur remakes of Jaws, The Shining and Shaun of the Dead to the Lego-sponsored Monty Python and the Holy Grail – that my first reaction is to assume it's a piss-take. The constant in-jokes and licensed characters throughout the trailer also don't lend themselves to establishing this as an actual movie – despite most animated films these days trying to out-do The Simpsons' reference rate. And then there's the plot, which itself seems to be retread of Rise of the Guardians.

But it's real – it even has its own IMDb page. It was created by Animal Logic – who animated Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole – and stars Will Ferrell, Morgan Freeman and Liam Neeson. No wait. Really? Even the cast list sounds like the kind of actors whose films get Lego trailer makeovers.

The Lego Movie is out through Warner Bros in February 2014. Unless it turns out to be a joke. The poster is below.
