Free animation course online teaches stop-motion, cel and CG skills

Want to add animation skills to your creative arsenal in 2016? Get started here for free.

This new free online course from the National Film and Television School (NFTS) and Creative Skillset looks to be a great place to start if you've not worked with animation before, as it features input from animators who've worked on shows such as Aardman's Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep (whose latest adventure The Farmer's Llama (above) was a big hit over Christmas) and Morph, and Blue Zoo's Alphablocks.

The course covers the many different forms of animation used in fllmmaking and TV, from traditional stop-frame to computer-based cel animation and CG.

If you want to take the free course, you'll need to do it in the next month – though in that period you can do it at your own pace as it's a MOOC (massive open online course).

The Explore Animation course is the latest free course on the FutureLearn platform that have been paid for by a £200,000 investment from Creative Skillset, following a D&AD-led course on brand management.
