Double Negative and Prime Focus World to merge

Double Negative's current projects include Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.

VFX houses Double Negative and Prime Focus World have announced a merger to create what they call "the world’s largest independent VFX, stereo conversion and animation company serving the Hollywood film industry".

The new business will be called Double Negative brand, likely because it's more highly regarded for its VFX work, including winning an Oscar for Inception. Prime Focus World is best known for converting films for 3D stereoscopic projection, though it has contributed some VFX work recently to the likes of Maleficent.

The new Double Negative will be run by the current managing director Alex Hope and CEO Matthew Holben. Prime Focus's Vancouver operation will be joined by a Double Negative facililty alongside DNeg's original home in Soho, London and its Singapore studio – giving DNeg a base in an area which some analysts are saying offers better tax breaks for Hollywood studios than the UK. Prime Focus's facilities in London, LA, Beijing and across India will continue to focus on stereo 3D conversion.

"Our new relationship with Prime Focus World combines fantastic opportunities to grow our business with the freedom to continue to manage Double Negative in the way we always have: Providing a great creative environment for our artists and producing ground breaking effects for our clients," says Alex.

“This is a transformational event – both for the companies involved and for the industry,” said Prime Focus founder and current CEO of Prime Focus World, Namit Malhotra. “Prime Focus has proven over the last five years the undeniable benefits of global collaboration: the flexibility of working in different time zones; the coming together of creative talent from across the globe; and the ability to leverage tax incentives. We can now bring this together with Double Negative’s unquestionable creative excellence to build a truly formidable offering.”

Double Negative's current projects includes Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, Terminator: Genesis, Insurgent, Grimsby and Ant-Man.
