Paper engineering used to turn phrases into real artworks

A humorous take on vending machines literally turns a sow's ear into a silk purse – and take the biscuit.

For her first solo show, Waiting Game, paper engineer Helen Friel has taken a sideways look at the idioms of the English language – and British life in general. She has built sculptures based on well-known phrases that can make you laugh out loud when you work out the joke.

The show also features Helen's taken on the British way of life, including our reaction to queuing.

Helen is a graduate of Central St Martins, who currently works for the likes of Vogue, Vanity Fair and Time magazines from her studio in south London.

Waiting Game opens at the Coningsby Gallery in London on Monday and runs until June 14.
