If you're a film junkie or a big follower of graphic design - or both - you will want to get your hands on this collection of Saul Bass film posters compiled into one nifty book.
The culmination of 20 iconic film posters by the revered US graphic designer and filmmaker will be the first poster book dedicated to one of the greatest American designers of the 20th Century.
Saul Bass (1920 – 1996) is known for his groundbreaking design work in many of Hollywood's greatest films, including Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, Otto Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm, Spartacus and The Shining.
Described as transforming the American post-war visual culture, in true Mad Men style, Saul Bass has been named one of the founding fathers of graphic design.
He famously included film titles and sequences into the realm of graphic design, creating a new type of kinetic typography for Hitchcock films and a basis for all modern opening title sequences that introduce the mood or theme of a film.
Some of the most famous logos and corporate identity campaigns are his, such as AT&T and United Airlines.
Saul Bass: 20 Iconic Film Posters culminates some of his classic designs, with each poster able to be removed and designed to fit a 12x16" frame.
The full list of film posters featured in the book is as follows: The Man with the Golden Arm, Saint Joan, Love in the Afternoon Bonjour Tristesse, The Big Country, Vertigo, Anatomy of a Murder, Exodus, Spartacus, The Magnificent Seven, Advise & Consent, The Cardinal, In Harm’s Way, Bunny Lake is Missing, Seconds Grand Prix, The Fixer Such Good Friends, The Shining and Schindler’s List.
Saul's daughter Jennifer Bass and friend Professor Pat Kirkham are the duo behind the poster book, following their work on definitive biography Saul Bass: A Life in Film & Design published in 2011.
Jennifer Bass is a graphic designer and artist. Her and her husband, who formed Treehouse Design Partnership in LA, work in environmental graphics, identity and book design.
The 44-page, pad bound book published by Laurance King will be available in the UK for £19.95 from September 5.
