Adobe releases Content-Aware Fill for video

Photoshop's 'magic' tool for replacing objects in a scene is coming to After Effects - along with other new features for that app, Premiere Pro and more.

It's the NAB video production trade show in Las Vegas next week, so as usual Adobe is announcing updates for Premiere Pro, After Effects and the rest of its animation, video and audio apps. What's different this year is that your software can be updated via the Creative Cloud app to get your hands on these tools today - rather than in May as in previous years.

The headline tool is Content-Aware Fill for Video - which was first showcased as Project Cloak during one of Adobe's 'Sneaks' R&D demos at the Adobe Max conference in 2017.

Content-Aware Fill for Video takes the popular Photoshop tool for removing objects from scenes and, essentially, lets you do the same for video. It can work with shots both with a static or moving camera - though it appears that in each case the fill is based the information on what's around the object - and moving objects will need to be manually tracked first.

You can use a number of tools to select the areas for Content-Aware fill to work on - masking, keying or the Roto brush. You can also paint or otherwise create a 'clean' reference frame for the software to work towards.

Also new in After Effects and Premiere Pro

Adobe has also added a new Freeform Project panel to Premiere Pro for better storyboarding, brought Photoshop-style rulers and guides to Premiere, created ties between Character Animator and the Twitch live-streaming platform and improved auto-ducking for ambient sound to Premiere Pro and Audition.
