Microsoft has announced that the beta version of its Windows Media Player for the Mac OS will be available for public download from October 20. The Windows version of the player was released in July. The player allows media developers to include the latest video and audio codecs and utilize digital rights management to stop piracy. According to Microsoft, Version 7’s codecs allow near DVD-quality video at 700kbps, near VHS-quality at 300kbps and CD-quality sound at half the file size of MP3. No date for the full release has been announced.
