Ulead has announced the availability of DVD Workshop 2.2, the latest update to its professional DVD authoring software. The update adds dual-pass MPEG encoding, support for dual-layer DVD burning and a PhotoImpact DVD Menu plug-in, as well as fixing several bugs.

Ulead claims that dual-pass MPEG encoding enables higher-quality DVD video productions with better compression. The technology enhances image quality by scanning ahead to analyze video footage to determine optimal encoding bitrates per frame.

DVD Workshop 2.2 also lets users create precise chapter point positions by automatically creating I-frames in the middle of a GOP structure, the company claims.

The update also equips DVD Workshop 2.2 with dual-layer DVD burning support, allowing the use of the latest dual-layer burners to double the size of video files and other media used in DVD projects.

Ulead now offers a DVD menu creation plug-in for enhanced interoperability between PhotoImpact, Ulead’s image editor, and DVD Workshop 2 for creating DVD menus. The DVD Menu plug-in for PhotoImpact lets users create DVD menus elements, assign and check object identification, and import them seamlessly into DVD Workshop 2, Ulead claims.

The update and the plug-in are free for users of DVD Workshop 2, which is available for £258.61 plus VAT, downloadable from the Ulead Web site.
