WoodWing Software has released its first public beta of Smart Layout for Adobe InDesign 1.5. Smart Layout introduces an 'article' concept to InDesign, says the company, which essentially links together style elements into a single object. WoodWing says that a complete 'article' - which could consist of items such as the header, intro and body text - can be manipulated as a single element without losing access to individual elements that make up an article. Features include XML support and Smart Grids - where each Smart Layout can have its own grid and baseline grid settings. Smart Layout is aimed at magazines and newspaper publishers, says the company. Smart Layout is slated for a September launch, and will cost $499 or E499.
