Want to create 3D models from 2D images, such as photographs? Previously you could only use MetaCreations Canoma, but now another ImageModeler is about to leap into the 3D fray. Launched by RealViz, ImageModeler is a high-end image-based modelling system that creates 3D models from photos and – here’s the twist – video or cinematic still images. ImageModeler works in much the same way as Canoma. The user places a number of points on an image, and the software turns it into a 3D model. ImageModeler displays a polygonal mesh that can be edited by the user, and textures can be added to the model’s surface. RealViz says the model can be exported to any other thrid-party compositing, animation or CAD software. Available as a stand-alone version costing $5,000 (around £3,000), RealViz plans to roll out versions for 3D Studio Max, LightWave and Maya. UK shipping details are not yet available.
