Giant D&AD pencil storms New York

This weekend, the D&AD will unleash a giant pencil -- in reality, a 10,000 gallon water tower sheathed in a huge crocheted pencil suit -- on Manhattan to publicize the call for entries to the D&AD Awards 2009.

The project has been conceived by artist Robyn Love and executed by a dedicated team of crocheters; the pencil theme reflects the coveted Yellow Pencil and Black Pencil trophies that the D&AD awards to the finest creative and advertising projects of the year.

The huge crochet pencil will be draped over the water tower, at 395 Broadway on Saturday morning (December 13) and will remain in place until early Sunday afternoon. The project follows another where a giant cardboard pencil was erected in Trafalgar Square, London, a few weeks ago.

All the action will be charted on the D&AD blog, and images will be posted on a dedicated Flickr group.
