Boris FX has released version 5.0 of its Final Effects Complete plug-ins for After Effects, with versions for Avid and Apple's Final Cut Pro and Motion to follow. This is the first major update to the plug-in suite since Boris FX acquired the technology three years ago.

Version 5.0 marks the expansion of the highly popular FEC product into three distinct flavours; Final Effects Complete for AE (Adobe), Final Effects Complete for FxPlug (Apple) and Final Effects Complete for AVX (Avid). The first in the series; FEC 5.0 for AE adds support for the After Effects CS3 application running on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and Windows Vista.

The two forthcoming FEC packages will be released later in the first quarter of 2008.

The new FEC release replaces its interface with the standard Boris FX UI. Contextual tools and onscreen widgets streamline effects workflow while the multi-processor acceleration increases the FEC package performance by up to 30 per cent, according to Boris FX. Rounding off the FEC 5 for AE package are the 800 plus preset effects which can be used to quickly create professional quality transitions and composites or modified to create a more unique look. The presets can be shared with other Boris users, working with different Boris packages on different hosts and platforms.

The plug-in set gain the Boris Motion Tracker and Pixel Chooser from Boris Continuum Complete, which allow users to selectively apply filters to specific areas of the image. The new FEC Native Parameter UI sports new control groups, contextual controls, on-screen widgets, custom controls and many other improvements.

Other new features include auto-animation in many of the transitions, and better lighting controls in Mr Mercury, Blobblylize, Glue Gun, Glass, and Ball Action. Extensive new controls in FEC Hair such as the ability to generate curly hair as well as the ability to modulate the gravity direction across the image based on a gradient map. New controls in FEC Bubbles include drift direction, particle randomness, and source texture pinning. In addition, FEC Bubbles now includes a Deflector point to create regions with no bubbles.

FEC 5.0 for AE costs $895 (around £455), or $299 (£152) as upgrade from any other version, or $295 (£151) for cross-grades from Boris Continuum Complete. FEC 5.0 for AE and BCC 5.0 for AE can be purchased as a bundled set for $1095.00 (£557).
