Would-be contestants have until this Friday (April 24) to register their interest to design a 50p coin marking the London 2012 Olympics, in a competition organized by the Royal Mint.

The competition is open to the general public and offers a winner the chance to have their designs made into coins and circulated, as well as a £1,000 cash sum. Contestants must select one of 27 Olympic and Paralympic sports to represent on their design; they may not include the image of recognizable sportsmen or sportswomen, and they must include the Olympic or Paralympic logo.

Would-be coin designers have until April 24 to register their interest in competing through the Royal Mint's website; they will then receive a template and detailed guidelines.
