AMD has added a new model to its dual-core 64-bit Opteron portfolio targeted at dual processor workstations, just five months after the initial launch of the dual-core Opteron last April. Hardware vendors announcing support for the chip included HP, who will offer the Opteron 280 in its xw9300 workstations designed for creative and scientific applications.

The Opteron 280 runs at 2.4GHz and features 1MB of Level 2 cache per core. AMD VP Marty Seyer claimed the processor delivers more performance per watt because of its PowerNow! technology that reduces power consumption by 75 per cent during idle time, helping to minimise power consumption.
