Ollie Munden has just put the finishing touches to his first exhibition as curator. Co-curated by Crush Design’s Johnny McCulloch, FreakShow brings together some of the best illustrators and artists from Brighton’s tight-knit creative scene.

Showing their works are the likes of Luke Insect, Shan Jiang, HelloMarine, Steve Wilson, Another Example, Andrew Groves (Imakethings), and Chris Ede – as well as Munden and McCulloch themselves.

Last winter Ollie and Johnny hatched a plan over beers in a pub in the Laines, and invited their favourite local illustrators to get involved.

Munden is familiar with big projects, having worked for McFaul Studio  – so he was aware that the project could mushroom past their initial plans.

“I knew that nothing is ever as simple as it first might seem,” he says. “You always end up putting in more hours than expected because once things begin to come together, your passion for what you’re doing becomes heightened and you just want the show to be as best as it can be.”

He says that the momentum you build up on a project such as this can help draw people in.

“Use the resources that are available to you,” he notes. “For example, Adam Nash – who I’ve known since playgroup – was the carpenter who built the gallery walls for us. Use your contacts and cut deals to get things done.”
