08. While the shapes are still selected, go to Object > Expand Appearance, then click Object > Flatten Transparency. In the following box, set the Raster/Vector Balance to 100 on the Vector side.
09. Now we have black fills and no outlines on the pattern shapes. Grab the Group Selection tool (the arrow symbol with a plus sign) and select only the interior areas of the pattern shapes, then go Edit > Copy, followed by Edit > Paste in Front. Click Object > Path > Offset Path, and type in ‘-0.04 in’.
10. With the Group Selection tool, delete the area that we copied and pasted, leaving the new smaller, interior black shapes. When you’re done it should look something like this. Click the interior black shapes and set them to a three-point stroke. This time, hit the Align Stroke to Inside icon in the Stroke window.
