Nikon’s D2Xs is the successor to the company’s top-flight 12.4-megapixel D2X professional digital SLR. The new model features a new 2.5-inch screen, along with an improved viewfinder, enhanced metering accuracy, longer battery life and a raft of user-friendly tweaks.

Externally, little appears to have changed. Like the D2Hs and D2X before it, the new model shares the same environmentally sealed magnesium-alloy body. It’s a big unit, but still smaller and lighter than its rivals.

The new screen is a colour-corrected panel, offering 170-degree viewing angles. This makes it easy to assess white-balance, and offers a massive improvement in terms of clarity over Nikon’s previous models.

The D2Xs has the same sensor as its predecessor – an APS-C size 12.4mp low-noise CMOS, with the option of 1.5x or 2x field of view crop using the High-Speed Crop mode.

Looking through the viewfinder, the new focusing is clean and uncluttered. Previously, the High-Speed cropped frame was etched and the corners illuminated on the screen, but the new model darkens the periphery of the focusing-screen instead, making composition easier when framing.

Although resolution drops to 6.8mp in H-SC mode, the narrower field of view has a similar effect to doubling the focal length of lenses, so an AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 VR effectively becomes a 140-400mm f/2.8. And, the continuous frame-rates bump up from 5fps to match the 8fps D2Hs. Predictably, file handling has improved over the D2X, but not so you’d notice – at 8fps, the buffer can absorb just three additional best quality JPGs.
