North American VFX house Stargate Studios has posted a showcase of its visual effects work on the latest series of the hit zombie TV show, The Walking Dead. You can watch the reel above, but – as with the show – it's pretty gory.
The reel shows how Stargate removed limbs and heads as various characters despatch zombies – though most seem to involve audience-favourite Michonne and her viciously-utlised katana. The reel also shows crashing helicopters, missing limbs on 'declawed' zombies, set extensions and a lot of hacked-off and blow-off heads.
The Walking Dead is a post-apocalyptic thriller following the progress of a group of survivors after zombies overrun the planet. It's based on a series of comics by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlar and stars British actor Andrew Lincoln (aka 'yes, it's Egg from This Life'). It's shown in the UK on the Fox channel (which used to be called FX)
Stargate Studios has studios in Los Angeles and Vancouver. It employs over 150 artists, supervisors, and producers across digital production and VFX.
The company has also created the Virtual Backlot, which uses the firm's VB Live real-time compositing system. This allows performers to be insrted into photorealistic virtual locations from 28 cities around the world from a Virtual Backlot Library
