A new Doctor Who video game for Mac OS X and Windows -- The Gunpowder Plot -- is to be made available for free download from the Doctor Who website on October 31. It was created by independent UK game development studio, Sumo Digital.
The Doctor Who Adventure Game: The Gunpowder Plot features a cast of well-known faces, including current Doctor Matt Smith, and companion Karen Gillan (Amy), Arthur Darvill (Rory), Ralf Little as Guy Fawkes, Phil Daniels as Town Crier, Emilia Fox as our 14th Plotter and CBBC presenter Chris Johnson as Barnaby. The creators say the game will offer players a "unique experience of one of the most important and memorable moments in British history -- The Gunpowder Plot."
In the press release for the game, Ralf Little is quoted as saying that "it is a way of bringing the story alive to, probably, millions of kids who are aware of the name Guy Fawkes because of November the 5th, but not actually really understand what the historical significance is behind it."
The game was commissioned by Victoria Jaye, head of IPTV and TV online content at BBC Vision -- in collaboration with the controller of BBC Learning, Saul Nasse. It follows last year's four-game series, which the BBC says has seen more than 2.8m downloads so far.
"We’re always looking at ways to bring Doctor Who stories to life for the audience beyond broadcast television," says Victoria, "seizing the creative potential of digital platforms to delight fans with new ways to engage with characters and storyworlds."
The game will be available to UK households only. A preview is available here.
