AMD hit with patent infringement suit

Friday 17 Nov 2006 - 10:29

Chip design company Opti has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), after reaching an out of court settlement in a similar case against Nvidia earlier this year.

Opti, which licenses intellectual property for technology used primarily by PC and chip manufacturers, claims that AMD has infringed three of its patents for a technology known as "Predictive Snooping of Cache Memory for Master-Initiated Accesses," Opti said Thursday.

The complaint alleges that AMD has infringed the patents by making and selling CPUs (central processing units) and core logic products using Opti's predictive snooping technology.

Opti filed the lawsuit with the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. It has asked for a jury trial and is seeking an injunction and monetary relief.

AMD, in Sunnyvale, California, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Opti, based in Mountain View, California, filed a similar lawsuit in 2004 against Nvidia, which agreed to a settlement earlier this year.
