Top artists put works on tents at Big Chill Festival

Thursday 16 Jul 2009 - 12:30

This years The Big Chill festival will include an appearance by the Blank Canvas Project, which brings together artists including Peter Blake, Neville Brody, Sarah Lucas, Gavin Turk and Rachel Whiteread to create works based around tents.

The charity project consists of a site specific installation, where pup tents will be transformed into artworks. Pitched on the beautiful north valley of the Big Chill Festival site and lit up at night, the tents will form a camp that aims to harness the playful spirit of the festival whilst visually expressing a strong message of hope for marginalised people around the world, according to the Project's organizers.

The full list of artists involved include Peter Blake, Sarah Lucas, Keith Coventry, Neville Brody, Lindy Hemming & Bob Starrett, Boo Ritson, Gavin Turk, Rachel Whiteread, Tom Ormond and Vivienne Westwood -- as well as Blank Canvas Project founder Cedric Christie.

Each tent will be auctioned individually later this autumn, and profits will be equally divided between different charities, as chosen by the artists, raising awareness of the issue of homelessness and displacement around the world. The auction will also include an additional tent customised by the artist Tracey Emin.

Christie was inspired by a charitable initiative staged in Paris by film director Jean Luc Godard’s benevolent group Enfant de Don Quichotte, which donated dozen of tents to homeless people and placed them along the Canal Saint Martin to raise awareness of the plight of the homeless in the French capital.
