D&AD celebrates six Black Pencil winners

Friday 16 May 2008 - 10:28

It’s been quite a year for the design industry, according to the judges of this year’s D&AD Awards – which last night presented six of the top Black Pencil awards and 64 ‘second-prize’ Yellow Pencils to the best work from the nominees.

This is the first time in the D&AD’s 45-year history that six Black Pencils have been awarded. Last year only two Black Pencils were awarded, and 59 Yellow Pencils.

The big winner on the night was Apple’s Jonathan Ive – who walked off with two Black Pencils for the iPhone and the iMac (both in the Product Design Category). This takes Apple’s running total to six Black Pencils – the most awarded to a single company. Apple also picked up a Yellow Pencil for the iPod Touch.

Black Pencils were awarded to the Milk: Get The Glass Web site – which was created by Swedish agency North Kingdom – and Projector’s Uniqlock site for Uniqlo. Both also picked up Yellow Pencils too – Get The Glass as an Online Game, and Uniqlock as a microsite.

The top awards were also handed out to Fallon for the insanely popular, Phil Collins-soundtracked Gorilla ad for Cadbury’s and The Partners for The National Gallery Grand Tour.

“This goes to show the impact this diverse range of creative fields are having in pushing forward the wider industry, marketing, and popular culture,” says D&AD President – and founder of Web agency Poke – Simon Waterfall.

“I, of course will now no longer talk to any of these winners, having failed to bag one of the most elusive and exclusive awards on the creative planet. I can only sulk and plot their downfall – terribly English of me! The D&AD Black Pencil: creative natural selection at work.”

Yellow Pencils were awarded to the Orion Publishing Group’s design team for the latest line of science-fiction novels, and to Sara Fenilli’s outstanding illustrative book Sometimes I Think, Sometimes I Am.

Prizes for visual effects were given to Passion Pictures' controversial Play-Doh commercial for Sony’s Bravia TVs, and to Big Yellow Storage Company's Wave ad, which featured VFX created by MPC. The Play-Doh ad also picked up a Direction gong for Gorgeous.

Other winners of Yellow Pencils included the HBO Voyeur site by BBDO, two Nintendo games – The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for the DS and Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii – and three viral sites: The Viral Factory’s How We Met, Motion Blur’s Train, and Cutwater’s Sunglass Catch.

The full list of award winners can be seen on the D&AD Awards 08 Web site.
