EXHIBITION: Sam's Desktop III

Thursday 27 Mar 2008 - 09:49

Young artist Dan Proops has announced the details of a solo exhibition of his oil paintings, which make witty, ironic use of computer-related iconography such as folders, warning windows and the Google homepage.

Microsoft featured his piece Windows Painting Downloading in their Design IT art exhibition last year, and Proops has been invited to be on the judging panel for this year's DesignIT in June.

Proops says: “I believe the influence of Cubist philosophy on the graphic user interface – i.e. operating systems like Windows' XP and Vista) has never been properly looked at. In my recent work I seek to set strong arguments for the connections between the many 'viewpoints' set up in Cubist paintings, and the way PC and Mac operating systems set up multiple 'windows' to allow the computer user to see and use and assimilate information.

"It can not be overlooked that the theories and ideas set up by the Cubist mentality of setting up objects and environments and viewing them from different vantages from within the same space has created the intellectual set of possibilities allowing the design and concept for the 'Windows' interface to evolve."

Sam's Desktop III takes place May 1 to 13, at the Empire Studios Gallery. For venue information see here.
