Edit cinematic 2K HD on a laptop

Tuesday 20 Feb 2007 - 10:37

Planet Video Systems has announced the launch of the world's first laptop-based cinematic 2K HD1080p video-editing system. Using an Apple MacBook Pro, together with a ProAVIO Editbox 10 RAID with and Expresscard eSATA Raid Controller interface, it's now possible to edit 2K HD1080 on the go, says Planet Video Systems.

The new RAID system uses ultra fast SATA300 drives. Up to ten drives can be connected providing up to 7,500GB of storage with a sustained read/write speed of over 500MB/second. The drives are hot swappable and can be used as an archive for media at a lower cost than tape-based backup systems.

The EditBOX RAIDS are 24-times faster than FireWire, reckons the company, and can also be used on Mac or PC desktop computers providing up to 15,000GB of storage at up to 9.6gigabits/second -- virtually the same performance as 10Gigabit fibrechannel systems.

A 4,000GB RAID costs just £1650 including raid controller card and cables.

The ProAVIO EditBOX RAIDS have been certified for use with AJA / Blackmagic / Matrox and many other popular video capture cards, says Planet Video Systems. They are aimed at video program makers looking for extreme performance and low unit cost (less than 38p/gigabyte of storage). Planet Video Systems are offering complete HD Edit suite solutions based on Apple Mac Pro / Final Cut Studio including Computer, RAID, Blackmagic HD capture card, display and software from just £3,500.

"This is nothing short of a total revolution in HD program making, driven by technological advances from Apple, Sony, Blackmagic, AJA and now ProAVIO," says Rod Gammons, MD of Planet Video. "Anyone involved in program and content making should make themselves aware of the impact of this new technology. HDV camcorders now allow high definition video capture for a small investment. Apple computers can capture, store, edit, composite, mix and master HD Video programs. Combine this with the fact that PROAVIO have made an ultra high-performance video storage and playback RAID system that works with both desktops and laptops, so now you can edit your work wherever you want, at a remarkably low cost. ProAVIO editBOX RAIDS start from just £385."

"With the digital TV switchover driving consumers to re-equip their audiovisual entertainment systems. Most people are now opting for HD ready televisions. SKY and the BBC are now both broadcasting (and commissioning) HD programmes, so video programme makers should be aware that there is little long term value in making programmes in standard definition as these programs will not look good on HD broadcasts or future back catalogue HD DVD releases. The future is high definition and the revolution starts here."
