Brandon Schaefer -- aka seek&speak -- is a graphic designer who has been creating some incredible retro-style movie posters for films from Batman: The Dark Knight to 8½ as a personal project. We caught up with him to learn more about these designs.
DA: Where did the concept for your posters come from?
BS: "I’ve been creating posters based off of films since I was younger, but most recently dived back into it as a way of forcing myself to try different things without being overly concerned with the consequences. I try to approach each poster with a different idea relative to whatever’s going on in the film, but the beginning is always the same – me, sitting in a chair, doodling in a cheap notebook."
DA: What is it about the classic/illustrative poster styles that your design hark back that appeals to you?
BS: "A lot of it probably stems from nostalgia. I can vividly remember looking at a hodgepodge of styles from the 40s to the 70s at my grandparents house when I was younger, which sharply contrasted with a lot of the stuff floating around at home (that mid-to-late 80s aesthetic), and I guess I look back on it fondly and tend to gravitate more towards that."
DA: Tell us about the creative process for the Batman: The Dark Knight and Back to the Future posters.
BS: "Many times it feels like throwing spaghetti at a wall and seeing if it sticks. The Dark Knight was one of four doodles I did in my notebook while laying around watching Spaced feeling sorry for myself for being lazy and not honestly designing anything for almost a year. The next day, I sat down and made it.
