Santa Monica-based studio Elastic has completed a moody spot for Honda, titled Instruments, in which a fully animated, sharp-edged jazz band takes to the stage.
The spot's characters are so stylised and geometric that they almost seem to be origami.

The project's striking appearance is partly the result of swimming against the tide of current computer animation, and using large, pronounced polygons rather than the ever-smaller ones that are the goal of most contemporary CG. This creates a stark, graphic look that's enhanced by the careful attention to shadow and shading.
While the look of the characters is stark and retro, this is balanced by sophisticated lighting and movement to add a modern feel; at the spot's climax a photoreal car is integrated with the animation.
It's the work of Elastic director Andy Hall, working with VFX studio a52 under CG leader Max Ulichney, and was commissioned by RPA.
