Behind the scenes on Terri Timely's absurd, inventive short film Synaesthesia

Wednesday 24 Jun 2009 - 11:53

Synaesthesia is a condition where, due to 'faulty wiring' of sensory pathways in the brain, sufferers experience one or more sense in the form of another. As well as experiencing their senses normally to a greater or lesser degree, they also have reactions where they experience sensations that aren't there, but are caused by their other senses -- so they, for example, 'see' sounds or 'smell' being touched.

Directors Corey Creasey and and Ian Kibbey, aka Terri Timely, recently created a visually-vibrant short film that shows the effect of this condition in an humorous, absurdist way. Terri Timely are best known for music videos for hip indie acts such as St Vincent and Joanne Newsome -- but also create ads. We spoke to Creasey about the film.

DA: How did you come to make Synaesthesia?

CC: "I heard about synesthesia a while ago from a friend of mine who studies cognitive science. I mentioned it to Ian and we both thought it could provide an interesting framework for some visual ideas we had been kicking around for awhile."

DA: What were your conceptual and narrative ideas behind the piece?

CC: "To us it’s not really important that the viewer have any prior knowledge of synesthesia, or that they make the connection between our film and the condition. We looked at it as way to create a sort of internal logic to some of our visual ideas and we thought this strange condition, where people’s senses get mixed up, could be an interesting starting point.

"Our main goal in making the film was to make something that was visually inventive, but also reflected our penchant for films that are structured with a sort of absurdist logic. We weren’t interested in making any sort of particular statement. Really, it was just an excuse to shoot fireworks indoors, have cats jump out of speakers, and explore our interest in Vietnamese retro-future art direction."
