EXHIBITION: Mail Me Art by Little Chimp Society

Monday 30 Mar 2009 - 10:11

Darren De Lieto, founder and co-editor of illustration website the Little Chimp Society, presents an exhibition later this week of postal art – including works by Jon Burgerman, Catalina Estrada and other leading illustrators.

The exhibition opens this Friday (April 3) at the Red Gate Gallery in south London. De Lieto organized the exhibition by publishing a call for creatives in 2007 to send him artworks through the post for a mail art experiment. Mail art is a long-established genre of pop art which celebrates the speedy, democratic nature of the postal system and elevates the humble – letters, flyers, postcards and so on – into a work of art.

De Lieto received over 600 artworks in response to his call for entries, from established illustrators, students and non-professionals. The week-long exhibition showcases his pick of the best; there is also a book of the project, titled Mail Me Art

The exhibition runs April 3-9.
