The D&AD's incoming Education Chairman, Greg Quinton, has announced that the position of graduates in the recession will be a major focus of his tenure.
In his first statement, he commented that helping agencies and graduates deal with the economic climate is crucial to his role.
“Of course recession is on everyone’s minds, particularly the minds of students about to graduate," said Quinton. “This isn’t a time to be afraid, though – it’s a time to do your best work and get noticed, and the best way to get noticed is with D&AD."
He continued: “As for those of us lucky enough to have jobs now, no matter what the current situation with recruitment, we need to keep meeting students and new graduates, crit portfolios, and see what new talent is out there. New creativity is always incredibly valuable. The grey clouds of recession will not last forever and we’ll all need new talent when the sun shines again, sometime in the future.”
Quinton - a D&AD Black Pencil-winner and creative director at agency The Partners - will host a debate on January 22 on mentoring and the responsibility of established designers towards students and young talent.
The debate, titled 'Everybody Starts Somewhere - Sometimes Great Ideas Need Direction', takes place at the Slaughtered Lamb, London, and will be posted online soon after. For more information check the D&AD blog.
