Author: The 10th Pictoplasma exhibition features top character designers including Ben Bocquelet, James Jarvis and Tim Biskup
Character design festival Pictoplasma is set to return to Berlin for its 10th anniversary in April 2014. Artists from around the world will take part in the exhibition and conference to celebrate art, animation, graphic design and toy-making.
Artists and speakers participating in next year's Pictoplasma festival include The Amazing World of Gumball creator Ben Bocquelet, British animator Andy Martin, bird sculptor Diana Beltran Herrera, London-born illustrator James Jarvis, character designer Tim Biskup (right) and many more.
The event organisers say 2014's Pictoplasma will focus on character portraits, exploring the artistic boundaries of what passes for a face, and how personality is conveyed. Included in that theme is the modern portrait – the selfie.
Pictoplasma is hosting an open call that is "dedicated to exploring the current state of contemporary character exhibition," inviting artists to submit self-portraits of their characters that appear to have been captured using a hand-held camera. The submissions will be exhibited at an installation during the festival.
The full Pictoplasma 2014 programme will be announced in February.
The exhibition will take place from 30 April to 4 May, and is free of charge. Those hoping to attend the conference, which includes lectures and workshops, will need to pay 250 Euros to register.
