There's a new Gear VR headset and 360 camera alongside the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus phones – plus VR content including a Ghost In The Shell VR experience.
Samsung has launched its highly anticipated Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 phones. If you want to know more about these, check out the Galaxy S8 review and Galaxy S8 Plus review on our sister site TechAdvisor. (They've also done e guide to the best Galaxy S8 deals available today too).
They're great examples of industrial and user experience design – up to the standard of Apple. But the S8 is more than just a phone, when wrapped with the new Gear VR headset it improves VR experiences at the level between low-end-VR-for-everyone – aka Google Cardboard – and pricey specialist systems like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
The Galaxy S8 has a Quad HD (2,960 x 1,440) screen that makes for more detailed VR experiences – with the faster processor allowing for fewer glitches and faster framerates in 360 video or CG VR experiences such as games.
The Gear VR headset is little different from the previous version – though the new one fits the S8. There's a single wireless controller that comes with it.
Samsung has also created a VR app and content portal at SamsungVR.com. This offers over 8,000 videos and 2,000 experiences – including a made-for-VR supernatural series called Invisible that was directed by The Bourne Identity's Doug Liman.
We'd really like to see this VR experience on the S8 and Gear VR – it's a promo experience linked to the Ghost In The Shell film that was created by leading UK VR house Rewind.
Samsung also has released the Gear 360, a consumer-level 360 video camera that's designed to make capturing panoramic video easy for your average person.
The Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus aren't available until April 28, but if you want one then you'll need to order one asap.
The Gear VR costs £99/$99 and should arrive at the same time. The Gear 360 will arrive in Q2 2017 – ie between April and June. There's no pricing yet.
