Pantone has created its first colour swatch that's tied to a Hollywood movie. Pantone Minion Yellow is either licensed from Universal's forthcomings Minions movie - based on the characters from the Despicable Me series of animated films – or promoting it. I can't work out which as, to be honest, it's an odd tie-in.
The colour is the same banana (banana, banana, banana) colour as the minions themselves, and will be added to the next version of Pantone's Fashion, Home + Interiors colour palette. This will cause delight in fashion and homewares designers worldwide, I'm sure – and not leave them wondering why an important tool for their professional work has been polluted by a movie tie-in.
The idea for this was apparently conceived by Pharrell Williams, whose other great ideas have included copying a song from Marvin Gaye and writing a rapey ditty that's one of the most despised songs on the planet.
Pantone says that "Minion Yellow is a custom colour designed to represent the sweet and subversive characters. An extroverted hue, it projects playfulness and warmth and is suggestive of intellectual curiosity and enlightenment". Or bananas, depending on your perspective.
