GenArts has released version 2 of its Sapphire plug-ins for Apple's Shake compositing software. The upgrade -- which works with the Mac and Linux versions of Shake -- offers 20 new effects, support for Shake 4.1, and more.

The Rays effect produces light beams emitting from the bright areas of an input clip. FeedbackDistort generates interesting time based feedback effects while distorting trails. Sapphire also gains five transition effects: WipeRings, WipeTiles, SwishPan, DissolveGlow and DissolveFilm.

Other new effects include DogVision, WarpMagnify, Invert, GradientRadial and TextureMoire.

The upgrade adds on-screen widgets, which GenArts says allows easy visual adjustment of parameters. Colour controls across effects have been improved with HSV and TML options. Individual effect enhancements include five new tranfers modes in Layer, separate RGB controls for Scale Lights and Offset Darks in Gamma, and support for Kodak 5217, 5218, 5285 and 7270 film simulation in Film Effect. WarpTransform has new swivel and tilt parameters for 3D control, while WarpPerspective has a new wrapAboveHorizon option.

Sapphire for Shake costs $1,699 (around £1,170) – down from $1,999 (£1,380) to the same price as Sapphire for After Effects and compatible applications. Upgrades from version 1 of Sapphire for Shake cost $599 (around £415).

<p>
Apple recently reduced the price of Shake from £1,700 plus VAT to £280 plus VAT.
