With most of the software let go by Metacreations somewhere in the ether of Adobe and Corel’s R&D departments, it is refreshing to know that the future of at least one tool is certain. 3D figure posing and animation software Poser is now in the hands of a new company, Curious Labs, who will be continuing to develop the package well into the future. Fans of the application will be pleased to know that Curious Labs is made up of the core engineering and development staff that worked on Poser at Metacreations. Although no new version is currently forthcoming, version 4.0.3 with a set of free upgrades is expected in the autumn. More details of this should be forthcoming at Poser’s ‘grand relaunch’ at the SIGGRAPH show in New Orleans at the end of July. A few copies of Poser 4.0 are still available from some distributors, but the new launch should make the package much easier to get hold of. Also, there is no current upgrade option available for owners of Poser 3 or earlier – which should be rectified when Curious formerly launch version 4.0. Poser 4.0 will cost $359 (around £240) when it ships in the US, with UK prices being "comparable".
