Corel has made the first concrete announcement regarding the development of the products it bought off Metacreations earlier this year. The company has made a beta of the version 6.1 patch for Painter available on its Web site. The update adds one new type of effect, enhances five more and provides a large number of bug fixes. The new Woodcut effect converts photos into what appears to be a hand-rendered woodblock print. It does this by reducing the number of colours in the image and adding a graphical black edge. Enhanced effects include soften, sharpen, highpass and blur. The patch is available for both Windows and Mac versions of the product, although Mac users need to be running Mac OS 8.5 or higher for the beta to work. The final patch will also work on Mac OS 8.0. The final patch will be released on Corel’s Web site at the end of the year.
