It sounds like a pie in the sky idea but the Enterprise is for real – and it generated the most buzz of any single stand at NAB. Spacehab, the only private company to build labs for NASA, is to build the first production facility in space. The facility will be docked on the Russian side of the International Space Station (ISS). 10 feet in diameter and 25 feet in length, it could even be used as a live broadcast space for concerts or other special events. SpaceHab has also set up a separate company, Space Media, to sell on material filmed on and outside the Enterprise. The facility was developed in partnership with Russia’s RSCE (Rocket Space Corporation Energia), who built and operated Russian spacecraft from Sputnik to the Mir orbiting station. SpaceHab also now owns the rights to the previously unreleased video, audio and still archives from the RSPE’s work.
