OnOne is to create a Photoshop plug-in based on a 'groundbreaking' image-resizing technique, which was trumpeted across the Internet when a video showing the technology appeared on YouTube last year. The video showed images being resized with different aspect ratios, but with the end results still appearing to be realistic.

The technology is based on the work of Shai Avidan and Ariel Shamir from the Mitsubishi Electric Research Lab (MERL), and was first shown at the Siggraph trade show in August 2007. It has since been developed as Liquid Resize by Vienna-based, husband-wife team of Ramin Sabet and Irmgard Sabet-Wasinger - and OnOne has now bought the technology.

A free public beta of Liquid Resize for both Windows and Mac OS X users will be available in late January 2008 as a stand-alone application from the onOne Software Web site. A Photoshop plug-in version of Liquid Resize is expected to be available in the middle of 2008, though pricing has not yet been announced for this.
