3D-software maker NewTek is offering users of a select set of 3D products the chance to upgrade to the powerful LightWave 3D software to £295 plus VAT – a move that ups the ante in the price war between 3D vendors.
The move, which makes the software available at a bargain price, is open to registered users of either Alias Maya, Softimage|XSI, Discreet 3DS Max, Electric Image Universe, Strata Studio Pro, Maxon Cinema 4D, Calligari TrueSpace, Has Animation Master, Autodesk AutoCAD, and SolidWorks.
LightWave 3D distributor Computers Unlimited are also offering first ten people to take advantage of the offer the chance to get a free ticket to the upcoming LightWave Masterclass, held on April 8, 2005. The offer runs until April 4, 2005.
To order, users will have to provide a copy of an invoice for their current software, or a copy of the front cover of the manual with serial numbers, or an email with serial numbers and license codes, says NewTek.
LightWave is the animation package responsible for the birth of 3D on television, the company reckons. Shows such as Babylon 5 and later series of Star Trek owe their look to its affordable power. Even so, TV isn't the limit of its powers.
It has been used in movies such as Spider-Man 2, Hellboy, and I, Robot.
