Nec Computers, a US-based unit of Japan's NEC, on Monday will announce a new ultra-thin notebook encased in lightweight silver magnesium, a source familiar with the company's plans said. Thin, light computers with snazzier designs and different colours than older models – with silver particularly popular – are finding a place in companies. The design, weight and colour trends are already trickling down to the consumer market, said Matt Sargent, analyst with La Jolla, California-based Associated Research Services (ARS). "On the corporate side, the market is focusing more on industrial design," he said. "While the thin-and light-market is focused on the corporate segment, it is drifting into the consumer market." Just last month, NEC extended its Versa line of notebooks when it introduced two new computers based on Transmeta's 600MHz Crusoe processor.
