Not content with shipping Universe 3.0 to an eager NAB crowd, makers Electric Image also previewed a new technology for animating CG characters that it says is slated for a future release in Universe. The company shipped Universe 3.0 to showgoers, debuting the release on Mac OS, Windows, and Sun Solaris platforms. Universe 3.0 is based on a new framework that adds new capabilities, provides feature parity across platforms, and supports an easier-to-upgrade infrastructure, says the company.
New features penciled in for the next version of Universe will focus on character animation, says the company. New tools will include a upgrade to the constraint system, weight-mapping for bones and skinning, and a previewer for motion-blur and depth-of-field effects. A release date for Universe 4.0 is yet to be released, but Digit will have an exclusive Universe 3.0 review in the next issue (on sale next week).
