Autodesk has released version 7.5 of its MotionBuilder character animation software, the first major release since the company purchased it along with rest of Alias. The upgrade adds new workflow options and better integration with Autodesk’s 3ds Max and Maya applications.

The upgrade offers new keyframe-centric workflows that streamline the process of keyframe animation, according to Autodesk. These include advanced editing of animation from within the timeline, a redesigned Undo system and enhanced posing and mirroring of character extensions.

The company says that this is particularly useful for scenes where multiple characters and props need to be manipulated together, such as fight and dance scenes.

MotionBuilder 7.5 offers automation of setup and animation for a wider range of characters types, including birds and dinosaurs. Support for inverse knee and elbow controls has been added, speeding up the animation of non-traditional characters such as fauns and centaurs (below).
