Blackfeet has released version 4 of its Polygon Cruncher plug-in for 3D Studio Max. The tool optimizes models with Max version 2.5, 3.0 and 3.1.
Polygon Cruncher reduces the number of polygons used in any object, stripping out multiples faces where a single one would do without reducing the level of detail. Blackfeet claims that this can reduce model complexity by up to 75 per cent.
This is designed to simplify the modelling process, as models are displayed faster, reduce rendering times and reduce the memory requirements for rendering machines.
New in version 4.0 is a better optimization engine and an improved OpenGL engine. A simplified user interface has also been introduced with a new visualization toolbar, and a display for optimization statistics and progress.
