IBM has released a 1GB version of its Microdrive miniature hard drive. The Microdrive is designed to be used within portable devices such as digital cameras, handheld PCs and laptop computers. The design of the Microdrive allows it to be used in any device with a CompactFlash Type II slot – or can be used in a PC card slot with an adaptor. The capacity of the new drive allows up to 1,000 hi-res images to be stored. However, this capacity and ease of use comes at a price. The drive costs £399.50 plus VAT, although the launch has led to the older, 340MB version of the drive being reduced in price to £227.40 plus VAT.
