LaCie has released new firmware for its FireWire 800 external hard drives. The new firmware is necessary to ensure compatibility with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
As part of the Windows XP SP2, Microsoft has updated the FireWire drivers, and LaCie drives with a FireWire 800 interface are affected by this update. Owners of these drives running Windows XP should download the ‘LaCie Update Tool for Windows (August 11, 2004)’ to ensure proper operation of the drives.
LaCie FireWire 800 drives running on different versions of Windows, or Windows XP without SP2, will function correctly with or without the updated firmware. LaCie FireWire 400 drives are not affected by Windows XP SP2.
In a separate announcement, LaCie has announced that Pinnacle Systems has qualified the Big Disk Extreme and FireWire 800 PCI Card for use with Pinnacle’s CinéWave RT and CinéWave RT Pro real-time editing systems.
