If you're looking for a last-minute present to keep your children creative over the Christmas holidays, check out Digital Video's The TAB Kids.

The TAB Kids allows children to create animations and cartoons. It's designed to be easy enough for children to use, but it's based on the Toonz technology as used by high-end cel animation companies to produce feature films and television
series.

The software has an interface based on graphical elements instead of menus and commands. Any task can be performed by simply operating on icons and buttons that are self-explanatory, says Digital Video, and by following simple steps that come from the professional production workflow.

Children can draw characters and other animation elements by using a wide range of drawings and modelling tools and taking advantage of the graphic tablet support. They can colour their drawings, with textures and styles for changing the outline and the painted areas.

Drawings can be animated by modeling, or moving and transforming a selected portion with set positions at different frames automatically moving animation elements around. Children can compose animations by repeating and adding drawings, overlapping elements on up to four different layers.

Pictures or drawings made with other software can be imported into The TAB Kids, as can soundtracks. When a piece is finished, it can be exported as a Flash animation for the Web, as a QuickTime video or in 3GP format for mobile phones.

The TAB Kids costs $80 (around £41).
