Epson has ushered in an era of 48-bit colour to its scanner family with the launch of the Expression 1680 and Expression 1680 Pro. Both scanners sport a 1,600-x-3,200 dpi resolution, can recognize a whopping 260 trillion colours, and 65,000 shades of gray. Also bundled is SilverFast Ai 5, a new software package that allows professionals to capture perfect scans, says the company. The Pro model includes a transparency table as standard. Epson says the new Expression is a scan speed demon. It is able to create a full-colour preview in less than ten seconds, says the company, and can scan an 8.5-x-11-inch colour photo in less than 23 seconds. A 35mm slide scanned at 1,600dpi takes just 65 says the company. The bundled Ai 5 software includes advanced scanning technologies, according to Epson. The software lets designers enhance, amend, adjust graduations, eliminate noise, combine images, zoom into details, and remove unwanted objects. The Epson Expression 1680 costs £649 plus VAT, and the Expression 1680 Pro costs £859 plus VAT.
