Pioneer has released the company’s first DVD-R drive that can record up to 4.7GB on a single-layer, single-sided DVD-R disc. The DVR-S201 is the first drive to utilize the DVD 2.0 specification developed by DVD’s governing body, DVD Forum.
DVD 2.0 bumps up the basic size of a DVD from 3.95GB to 4.7GB. Using the DVR-S201, discs are recorded at 1430KB per second – equivalent to 1X speed. Playback through the DVR-S201 or any DVD drive can be performed at up to 2x speed.
The DVR-S201 connects to workstations using a SCSI-2 port. It is expected to cost around £3,500 plus VAT.
