Digital image-processing equipment makers Snell & Wilcox and Equator Technologies have teamed up to develop a streaming-video technology that they say is the first to deliver better-than-VHS image quality at bandwidths of less than 1Mbps (Megabits per second). The companies announced the product in a statement timed to coincide with the first day of the IBC show in Amsterdam. The product will allow broadband system operators to offer video programming via a set-top box at half the bandwidth of competing technologies, the companies said, meaning more choice and higher quality for consumers. They added that the technology will for the first time enable "quality video" over existing ADSL links.
